Baptism Membership Course Baptism is ordained by Jesus Christ, and hence, important for us to seek it. We thank God for many who have indicated their desires to seek baptism in obedience to Jesus’ command. There is still room for more. Please see Pastor if you are interested but have not sign up yet.
The 10th Youth Mission Trip to Cambodia and Bible Conference (June 4-9, 2012) seek your prayers and support: We have raised $800 of our intended target of S$8000 for the trip and conference. But on the collection of clothing, due to overwhelming response, we regret that we are unable to accept any more adult clothing. All contributions may be done at the Sanctuary Lobby.

The Apostle Paul in writing to his young protégé Timothy, advised him to be concerned with “rightly dividing the word of truth.”
You’d recognise that phrase as coming from 2 Timothy 2:15 in the New, and the (old) King James translations of the Bible.
I’d venture a guess that modern day readers, without the knowledge of the Apostle Paul’s tent-making occupation, would find it difficult to understand “rightly dividing.”
As a tent maker, Paul would be concerned with cutting the hard-to-get materials he had in the right way so as to minimise wastage and to make good tents. So, “rightly dividing” is therefore a phrase that came from his tent making trade and it meant “cutting a straight line”, “dissect correctly” (Strong’s) and to “proceed on straight paths, hold a straight course, equivalent to doing right” (Thayer).
So the modern translations which translate these as, “who correctly handles” (NIV) or “rightly handling” (ESV) are closer, in my opinion, to Paul’s intended meaning. His intent was to encourage Timothy to, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
To “be diligent” of course takes loads of time! Uninterrupted, quiet, away from other, often pressing, distractions kind of time – this of course is a modern luxury. To “be diligent” however, is where I seek – and need – spend most of my time no matter how difficult. It is especially so, when I share fully the sentiment expressed by J. H. Jowett, a “prince” of preachers. Jowett says, “If the pulpit is to be occupied by men with a message worth sharing, we must have time to prepare it.”
Jowett’s conviction, which I fully subscribe to, is that no sermon is ready for preaching, not ready for writing out, until we can express its theme in a short pregnant sentence as clear as crystal.
I find the getting of that sentence is the hardest, the most exacting, and the most fruitful labour in my study. First, I wait on the Lord for His point – what is His message? What does He want me to get across? Then I have to craft that sentence! Otherwise the thoughts for the 3000-plus word sermon will not flow.
This is where I spent my time. Jowett recommends to “dismiss every word that is vague, ragged, ambiguous, to think oneself through to a form of words which defines the theme with scrupulous exactness.”
The sermon ought not to be preached or even written, until that sentence has emerged, clear and lucid as a cloudless moon. That is how the “word of truth” ought to be rightly handled.

A brief report on our Mission Trip to Nepal from April 23 to 27, 2012
WHEN we started to plan for the trip, Pastor Dil Tamang, our gospel partner in Nepal, suggested that we hold a Bible Conference, to which he could invite all the grass-roots pastors from various parts of Nepal to attend. The group photo on the left, taken on the last day of the conference, shows all those who attended. It was a real source of joy to fellowship with them; knowing that some had to undertake arduous trips to attend. How does, hiking for two days, combined with an 18-hour journey in a rickety bus with hard seats and no air-conditioning sound to you?

Pastor Mark and I were blessed and encouraged by their zeal and devotion. We had a great time of learning and fellowshipping: and, indeed, were refreshed and encouraged by one another. The principals from the 3 Bible Training Centres, in Surkhet (Mid-West), Dhankuta (East Nepal), and Kathmandu, and some current students from the latter centre were able to join us. All in, 35 soldiers and future soldiers of the Lord attended the conference.
The post-conference feedbacks were all very positive; but I believe one of the chief blessings we were able to facilitate was the gift to all attendees of a locally published bible dictionary – translated from Don Fleming’s. We could literally see the joy in their faces when these were presented to them. It turns out that the dictionary is the only other resource, besides the bible, the grass-roots pastors will have when they return to their remote villages to help them minister the gospel.
This is what Pastor Mark Tay has to say about the trip.
This is my first mission trip to Nepal, labouring together with Pastor Robert in the gospel. It was a joy to teach these grassroots pastors and bible school students. As Pastor Robert had written above, these pastors and students made the arduous trip just to learn more about the pastoral ministry from the epistle of First Timothy. They came to learn so that they could in turn be better able to shepherd their own flocks more effectively. Both of us took turns to share through our capable Nepalese translators.
What a blessing it was when we saw their hunger to “devour” God’s word and their eagerness to learn! One feedback from them was that they would like a much longer conference. They did not mind the long journey, the language barrier and the long hours sitting in a cramped church hall not much bigger than any HDB living room. But they wanted to spend more time with us in fellowship and encouragement. I see the potential of our mission involvement in Nepal. If we could adequately equip these pastors to do the work, we will see many more churches both in the cities and remote villages being established by these pastors! God has indeed guided our church to help these indigenous people so that this potential could be realized. Our part is to do the training, equipping and empowering of these pastors and grassroots leaders to do the work.
“And the things that thou has heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” (2 Tim. 2: 2)
Pray for our mission work in Nepal (and elsewhere, of course) that we may be faithful and equal to the task He has entrusted us with. We thank God for each and every one of you who have participated in this work both by your prayers and financial support.

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered — John 15:6

From the numerous requests I regularly receive from members for prayers (for which I am honoured to comply), I’m drawn to the conclusion that our work-stretched, time-starved, and emotionally-stressed members are not high on the happiness scale. Difficult and problematic relationships are also contributing factors.

By God’s grace, I came across Christian author, L. Swindoll’s recommendation, Simple Secrets to a Happy Life, which I’m most pleased to share with you. I hope this will help you climb up the happiness scale.

Swindoll asserts that it is possible to live a happy life — if you learn to focus on some simple things that have eternal value. Here are some of them.

- Be on time for everything. Showing up on time lets others know that you care about them and that they can really trust you to be responsible and fully engaged in relationships with them.
- Take Jesus with you everywhere. When you remind yourself to focus on the reality of God’s presence with you in every situation, you can experience peace that will make you happy.
- Let people know you care, but carefully. Don’t neglect caring for the people you sense God calling you to help, but be sure to take care of your own needs in the process. You can derive happiness both from seeing how your efforts help people in need, and from making sure that your own needs are met.
- Keep your word every time. When you live with complete integrity by always saying what you mean doing what you say, you’ll naturally enjoy happy relationships with other people.
- Read your Bible every day. When you give yourself a daily dose of the words of life that the Bible contains, you can experience all the blessings – including happiness – that come from absorbing those words into your soul.
- Accept events as they happen. Don’t let life’s unexpected events steal your happiness. Instead, accept them as they happen, trusting God to do what’s best through them and serving God no matter what. When you do, you’ll experience the happiness of seeing God fulfil good purposes from any event.
- Focus on what’s important now. You can feel happiest when you’re fully engaged in what God wants you to focus on during each particular moment in time. Live consciously – alert to God’s presence with you and guidance for you – so you won’t miss fully experiencing each moment that God gives you.
- Think before you say it. Avoiding the regret that comes from speaking carelessly will make you happy. Keep in mind that words contain great power to bring about either good or evil. So carefully consider your words before you talk.
- Get doctrine under your belt. Get to know biblical truths well and apply them regularly to your life; when you do, you can be happy because you’ll be approaching life from the right perspective.

Happily in Christ,
Pastor Robert Chew
