“Stories from MJ’s Classroom” is a series of books commissioned by MCYS in support of the UN Convention on the Rights of Children (UNCRC). On 19 Jan 2011 the Asian Storytelling Network, a professional storytelling company, brought the stories to life for MCCDC’s 4 to 6 year olds. The MJ series aims to raise children’s awareness of the key UNCRC principles of non-discrimination, survival and development, working in the best interests of children and encouraging expression, as well as to empathise with those who do not have access to such rights. It was a rare treat for the children who listened, enraptured, in the 25-minute session. Many children said that the stories were interesting and expressed their desire to read the books for themselves. Even the teachers thoroughly enjoyed storyteller Nancy’s animated delivery!
Mark Victor Hansen, a philanthropist states that “The great livers, the people who are fully self-actualizing and alive, are the great givers.” In our fast-paced world, we feel that it is important to take the time to remind our children about sharing and caring for the underprivileged. Thus, we will be bringing our 4 to 6 year olds to the Kheng Chui Loke Tin Kee Home, which houses 130 elderly residents, on 4 Mar 2011. They are very excited about this trip and we will be sharing more with you.
